Our story

Many money problems aren't just about how much you earn. They're about when expenses arrive and whether you've prepared for them.

Expenses arrive in lumps while income arrives in drips. The insurance premium, the holidays, the transmission that was always going to fail eventually — none of it fits neatly into a monthly paycheck, so it often lands on a credit card. That's how careful people end up in debt, and it's one of the problems PlanAhead Money was built to help with.

How these tools came about

I had been using Quicken for many years before I began using the 10-10-80 budget and Freedom Account. I already understood our spending, maintained an Emergency Fund, knew our net worth, and had little or no debt other than a mortgage.

Even with those pieces in place, I found gaps worth solving. The 10-10-80 approach helped give our income a clearer structure. The Freedom Account helped us prepare systematically for expenses that did not fit neatly into a monthly budget. Together, those two practices dramatically improved how I managed money, and I still use them today.

The Rapid Payoff Calculator came later, after repeated customer requests roughly 20 years ago. I first built it as an Excel tool to help customers organize debt and see how a payoff plan could work. I built it in response to those requests, rather than because I personally needed a debt-payoff tool.

That experience shapes PlanAhead Money. People arrive with different strengths, habits, and missing pieces. You do not have to be financially disorganized to benefit from a better tool. My goal is to offer practical guidance, free resources as they become available, and affordable applications that help you strengthen the parts of your financial foundation that need attention.

Planning ahead isn't about restricting your money. It's about giving yourself more choices when life happens.

About the eight building blocks

The eight building blocks describe areas worth understanding and strengthening. They are not a retelling of my life or a required sequence for everyone. Start where you are, use what already works for you (including tools like Quicken, if that's part of your system), and fill the gaps that matter in your situation.

The PlanAhead Money philosophy

Spend intentionally. Understand where your money is going before trying to optimize everything else.

Prepare for real life. Use a Freedom Account for irregular expenses and the unexpected-but-normal costs that inevitably occur.

Protect against the big things. Keep a separate Emergency Fund for genuine financial emergencies and income disruption.

Break the debt cycle. Use a deliberate repayment plan and keep paid-off payments working until consumer debt is eliminated.

Build breathing room. As debt falls and reserves grow, fewer financial decisions have to be made under pressure.

Then build for the future. Long-term investing matters. A strong financial foundation makes it easier to invest consistently and leave investments alone long enough to do their job.

How we build

Simple beats sophisticated. A tool you actually use every month beats a 40-feature app you abandon in three weeks. Our apps use a familiar spreadsheet-style layout because most people already understand rows, columns, and visible totals, and they run privately on your own computer.

Your data is your business. No bank logins, no account linking, no data harvesting. Your data file lives on your computer, in a folder you choose.

Pay once, no subscription. We don't think managing money should be a subscription. You buy a tool and continue using the version you purchased with no recurring fee. Updates to your current version are normally included when available.

Progress you can see is progress you'll keep. Every tool we make is designed to show the payoff date moving closer and the categories filling up, because visible progress is what keeps people going. Progress is better than perfection.

What's here for you
